CARBON FOOTPRINT? HOW ABOUT A RICE FOOTPRINT?
Don't look now but if you have a yen (pardon the pun) for some stir-fry with rice, you might search from store to store just to find a bag of the newly-precious grains. I personally blame algore. He has been running his pie-hole for years about global warming and needing ethanol for car fuel. Well - way to go Al. Now in addition to paying $4.00 a gallon for gas, we will be paying $15 a bag for rice. Farmers are quick to learn that it's a better deal for them to plant corn instead of wheat and other grains since they can sell corn for ethanol. For the most part, don't picture the poor farmer in Iowa trying to make ends meet. Most of those farms have long since been sucked into huge agribusiness conglomerates who enjoy subsidies from our tax dollars. In addition to farm subsidies, the ethanol industry is also heavily subsidized. So we are getting shafted by our government in so many ways! Ah so! With the price of diesel fuel skyrocketing, it won't be long until pretty much all of our consumable goods triple in price.
I have read about aerobic rice which can be grown without much water. I like to picture all those little rice kernels with their spandex outfits working it! Nothing like a nice aerobic rice pudding I always say!
